Ric.. 4001 vs 4003

Hi there,
i'm shopping for a ric in the 1200-1800 range ideall end up around 1500 or better.

i've heard some not so great things about the new rics (4003) as compared to an older70s 4001 model...

what are your thoughts on getting an earlier 4003 model (like 80's) verses a brand new 4003??
