Scales V Chords

I'll be at UK bass Day, so see you there. In the mean time could you help with question. Whilst learning the bass did you use chord structure more than scales or vice versa. At the moment I feel chords are more simplistic and scales and modes are a pain in the arse . I know this is not a straight forward question so I'll apologise now.
