Singing while playing

Hi Janek, I've noticed in videos and even at times on the Live at 55 Bar that you sing when you play. I've since started singing while playing as well and have found it to help a lot in coming up with more melodic lines and solos.

So, the question is do you sing what you're playing, or play what you are singing? I find when I try to play what I sing that's what I evetually end up doing, and like I said improves my playing.

Also, do you have any excersizes other than general ear training that you do to aid this?

Thanks in advance man, you're truly an inspiration.

Here's my own personal take (looking forward to Janek's response):

When I do it (not that often, I admit), it's not singing what I play or playing what I sing. Those notes are coming from my voice and my fingers at the same time, but more importantly, from the same place: my instinct for melodic expression. So it's pretty tough to put one in front of the other for me.

I have the musical idea in my head and can sing that idea without the instrument. so I'm singing and playing the musical idea I'm having at the same time.

It's great for phrasing, and is more of a natural extension of your ideas when you have the natural sound of the voice somewhere in the mix.

easy,

Janek
