| I certainly do still play bass live! I hope I always will.
I do play pop gigs where everyone in the band has in-ear monitors, but I've never been on a gig where anyone had the click except the drummer. Or whoever is the MD perhaps, but I'm normally the MD and I always give the drummer the click to be able to count off the songs. And the less people in the band that have the click, the less rigid the feel is going to be. As long as the drummer knows how to play with a click and make it feel good, the rest of the band just play with each other like they would regardless of the click. And most of the time it's not just a click, it's a whole bunch of backing tracks such as BV's, horns, extra guitars, sometimes lead vocals if it's a mime gig. And I'll take a good mix of all the musical ellements of the backing track, just not the click.
your question about how a guitar player and drummer would be able to use sequenced synth without listening to a click is a little vague..... are you trying to have a band with no bass player? and run all the bass on a laptop? the thing you have to remember is that the click is a point of reference for the beginning of a song. it mark where the form starts when you have programmed material. It's totally possible to sequence anything you like and play along to it, it's just a matter of at least one person in the group knowing where it starts and stops.
You might want to try Ableton Live or Logic 7 Pro for sequencing. Those are the two programs I generally use.
