Janek,

Sorry to be asking so many gear questions! However, I'm just starting to get into synth bass and was wondering what setup you recomend using. I've played piano for a while, but keyboards are something I'm learning...I guess for the time being I'm primarily concerned with using it live (do you use an amplifier or just let the soundman take care of everything like with most keyboards?) but would like add it to record with it if the opportunity is there.

Thanks for you help!

Brian,

I currently use a laptop setup. I'm using my mac with Reaktor by native instruments that I programmed a ton of presets in, and that I can also program any sound I need on the fly prtty much for new gigs, and for recording. Live I just use a pair of DI boxes and run it stereo to the house. I'm using a two octave m-audio USB keyboard to trigger it all.

I used the same stuff in the studio too.

Easy,

Janek

So wait a second. Do yu still play bass live? Do you play in outfits where everyone is going in ear with their monitoring and everyone has a click?

I'm still very new to the ideas of sequenced sounds in live gigs.

But i'd really like to give my MacBook Pro some sea legs.

maybe a better question would be -

how would a guitar player and drummer be able to use a sequenced synth without having to listen to a click?

Hmmmm... janek I'll definitely defer to you on this one.

I certainly do still play bass live! I hope I always will.

I do play pop gigs where everyone in the band has in-ear monitors, but I've never been on a gig where anyone had the click except the drummer. Or whoever is the MD perhaps, but I'm normally the MD and I always give the drummer the click to be able to count off the songs. And the less people in the band that have the click, the less rigid the feel is going to be. As long as the drummer knows how to play with a click and make it feel good, the rest of the band just play with each other like they would regardless of the click. And most of the time it's not just a click, it's a whole bunch of backing tracks such as BV's, horns, extra guitars, sometimes lead vocals if it's a mime gig. And I'll take a good mix of all the musical ellements of the backing track, just not the click.

your question about how a guitar player and drummer would be able to use sequenced synth without listening to a click is a little vague..... are you trying to have a band with no bass player? and run all the bass on a laptop? the thing you have to remember is that the click is a point of reference for the beginning of a song. it mark where the form starts when you have programmed material. It's totally possible to sequence anything you like and play along to it, it's just a matter of at least one person in the group knowing where it starts and stops.

You might want to try Ableton Live or Logic 7 Pro for sequencing. Those are the two programs I generally use.

Easy,

Janek

Janek,

Do you find it essential to use a Mac for running synths (and other things like Pro Tools, Logic, etc...)?
