Question Thinking of minor chords

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Janek,
I was just wondering whether you could explain the bebop concept of thinking of relative minor scales on major chords and the sort of runs that might be used. I read an interview where you alluded to this idea but did not go into detail and it sounds an interesting idea.

Thanks,

if you want to think about certain chords as just minor you could loosely use this concept.

Think of a Bb major chord as being G-, C7 as G-, Eb lydian as G-. basically taking minor bebop language and being able to apply it to those different chord types to get different sounds.

I'm not sure when that interview you're talking about is from, but I'm guessing it's from quite some time ago.

I would highly recommend getting to a point in your improvising where you're not thinking about chord changes as being anything but sounds. Do this through transcription, and constant work on the language of improvisation, and you'll find lines and ideas will be flowing far more naturally.

Easy,

Janek
