| Marcus,
thanks for picking up the album, I'm glad you're digging it.
there's a thread in my forum about the hannon virtuoso pianist book which you should check out. That basically covers my warm up stuff, and what I go through to get loose when I have time to shed.
I would love for my practice time to be regimented, but right now I'm super busy in the studio all day every day, and have very little time to practice. It goes in waves for me. Sometimes I won't be busy at all and will have days on end to stay home practicing and working on new music. these practice routines will consist of some technical maintenance, and then I'll move on to developing new ideas and just improvising over changes, and writing new melodies.
Quite often I'll have a specific project I'm about to embark on so I'll be working the music for a new artist before I start working with them.
I'm working with Sahara Smith (singer/songwriter) in austin in March, so I'll be working on her music next week. I'm also going to play for the musical director for Peter Cincotti (warner brothers recording artist) to see if we have a vibe and if I'm going to do that gig, so there again, another artist's materialo that I need to be shedding. ongoing things right now include Mike Stern's repotoire which i am constantly working on, as well as my own music when i get a chance.
And right now, this week, I'm working with a singer on Sony Records, so I'm deep into his songs and working on getting them right for a show we have coming up next week.
It's all about time management for me. I have to make sure I alot enough time to work on the new material enough in advance of a gig or rehearsal I'm having with someone, so that I can do the best job possible with it.
Certain gigs take more priority that others, but I really try to give 100% for everyone, no matter how big or how small, or how much or how little the gig pays. The bottom line is that I'm a muscian, and someone is hiring me to do a job. The best job I can do. And I respect the music more than anything, so I will give everything I have to it every time I pick up my instrument.
Switching between different music in a short time period can be tricky sometimes. I've been all day in the studio rehearsing an R&B thing, then I had to go and teach at the Bass COllective, and then straght to the studio to produce a vocal session and play bass on a jazz album I'm producing. So that's a real challenge for me right now, and it's something I'm really enjoying the opportunity to do.
Easy,
Janek |
