What made you learn the Trumpet ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey janek !!

I know you're really busy on tour with V V Brown and I would really appreciate if you could answer my question .

I know you play The Piano , Guitar along with the bass . But I was surprised to know that you also play the trumpet . how did that come about ? What drew you to the trumpet ??

How did you learn the trumpet ? I mean did u take lessons from some of the amazing trumpet playes u work with like Brad Mason ??

How was your expreince learning it ??

Was it case for you that you only had to learn the mechanics of the instrument becasue all the music was alreadyu inside your head ?

Any advice for a bas player who wants to lean a wind instrument ?

Thanks ,
Vibhas .

I think Janek learned pretty much on the road, for this tour, but I may be very wrong, he could be being modest!

I first started learning the trumpet a few years back on and off cos I wanted to play in Pat Metheny's band which has always featured a trumpet player for the most part. It's a bitch of an instrument to play and I soon got busy with so many other things that I neglected it for the past year and a half. I started playing again and getting serious about the instrument when it made sense to play it on my current touring gig with VV Brown. Although I only play on one song per night with her, it's still something i have to practice every day and keep my chops in shape. If I miss a day I'm kind of screwed which sucks......

and for me it's nice to play an instrument that's small, portable, I can go sit in at jam sessions with it real easy, and it's just one note at a time.... kind of cool.

Easy,

Janek

Since I'm a trumpet player, this question is quite amusing to me.

It's like saying "NASA knew they wanted to get to the moon, so they just had to work out a few mechanical things." Except it's not, because there is no past tense to learning the mechanics of the trumpet.
