Sign in to disble this ad
I'm going to be coming to Austin on June 10th and I was wondering if there are any Jams, clubs, music stores or restaurants that I should get to while I'm there (two weeks). I'm flying in and I'll have a Bass with me...
Also if anybody wants to get together while I'm there let me know.

If you can get to Jonestown, TX, about 45 minutes north of the airport, on Wednesday night, come to our jam! Larry's Lone Star Bar & Ice House, on FM 1431. Music starts at 9, but come a little early so I can introduce you 'round. I'll make sure Rick let's ya up.

We're playing the ROT Rally on the 13th, at 11 a.m., and the next day, there's a party gig we're playing, and you're welcome to come on out. There will be a jam before the paid bands begin, and/or I could get my band to let you up for a few songs. I'll vouch for you. The party is at Calkin's Country Store & Biergarten, on Nameless Road, and starts around 1 p.m. and runs 'til we're done. Big Lou's Birthday Bash!

Will do!!! I've gotta clean out my inbox, and then I can send you a PM.

Oh, and you've got to pay a visit to Bass Emporium, on Anderson Lane. They're awesome! Its just wonderful...a heady experience...to walk into a shop full of *nothing* but basses and bass gear!

What kind of music are you into? There's live music all over, it just depends on what you're into. As far as restaurants go, there are some great ones, again, just depends on what you like. Shoot me a pm, and I can send you my personal info if you want more specifics.

Hey now, there's lots of cool places for you to go. In San Marcos, let me recommend Palmer's Restaurant for a great upscale dining experience, and for some really nice middle eastern food, try the Cedar's Cafe just north of downtown next to the Kinkos. There are lots of good music bars on the square in downtown, and it is much safer than 6th Street in Austin.

You can also take a swim or a tube on the river if you're so inclined, it is a gorgeous clean spring fed river.
Life in San Marcos centers around the river, and right next to downtown the river crosses the road and there is a recreation center and path down the river with swimming areas. On the edge of town there is a man made water rapids that is very cool and is the tube take out.

In Austin, on South Lamar, try South Austin Music for some really cool used instruments. They get all kinds of cool stuff through there. Nice folks working there as well.

Right next door is one of the coolest music venues in Austin, if you like Blues, called The Saxon Pub. Charlie Sexton plays there often, and when not on the road, you're likely to see the likes of Tommy Shannon, Doyle Bramhall Jr or III, Chris Layton, etc hanging listening to friends play their music. Bobby Whitlock, formerly of Derek and the Dominos, and his wife often gig there, as do many well known others like Stephen Bruton.

Near there on South Congress is the legendary Continental Club. Right across the street from there is the legendary Guero's Mexican Restaurant. Best upscale Tex Mex in town.

Ruta Maya's coffee house off Congress near 71 behind a topless joint is a cool hang often with cool acts playing. Lots of eclectic acts there.

Bass Emporium is also very cool with very nice folks there.

+4 on Bass Emporium. Chuck is a hellagood tech if your bass needs a tune up after the flight. Ed Friedland teaches there on Thursday and Friday so you may catch him in between lessons.

Grab an Austin Chronicle (free underground newspaper) for show listings. You can find them in bins in most music stores, restaurants, etc. If you get here a couple of days early, at Antone's Blues Club, Eric Johnson is teaming up with Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton for a benefit show on June 8th. Look up Antone's. If you are into jazz, The Elephant Room has been listed in the top ten jazz clubs in the USA.

If you like Tex-Mex, you got to make the pilgrimage to Matt's El Rancho. I also like Chuy's.... a lot.

+1 on tubing the river in San Marcos. Crystal clear water, coeds in bikinis, and beer... Did I mention bikinis?

{{{HI-5's!!!}}}

The ROT doesn't pay very well, but man, is it ever fun!!!

OP, if you can go by the ROT Rally at the expo fairgrounds, do so. Music all over the place, hot biker chicks, and more beautiful motorcycles than you can shake a stick at!

Dave - I see that you're from San Diego and that you play blues.

Giddy Up's on Manchaca has a Wed open mic blues jam hosted by a SD expat, JJ Slyde. As a matter of fact several regulars are former SD residents.

You can find an open mic just about any night of the week.

PM me and I'll be glad to answer any questions you might have.

- Jack

Man this it turning into a full schedule of cool stuff to do....

I'm getting excited about my trip..... I just hope my bass survives the flight there... I got a "Road Case" but ATH can be brutal !!!

My flight is set, motel booked and my car will have a GPS...

Now if I can just keep my chops up..... I guess that's what mornings in a motel are for ...

Clubs: Saxon Pub, Antone's, Stubb's.

Music Stores: Bass Emporium for sure, South Austin Vintage, Ray Henning's if you want to see where SRV bought #1.

Restaurants: Threadgill's (best chicken fried steak anywhere), Stubb's BBQ, Magnolia Cafe, Kerby Lane Cafe (Eric Johnson loves the blueberry pancakes & I completely concur), Mozarts, Ironworks BBQ, Sam's BBQ (east on 12th - this was SRV's favorite BBQ after a gig and it's great), Amy's Ice Cream - ask for the Roky Erickson.
