Smile Brisbane GTG #2 : Photos [Image Heavy]

Firstly a massive thanks to our gracious host Reno for organising the venue (and arranging the biggest downpour Bardon has witnessed).

While small in number we had a great time (at last we met some of the other Brisbane TBers who didn't make GTG #1). Chris was unable to 'arrange' his wife to conceive and thus had no excuse for being absent this time.

Everyone had a chance to try each others' basses through all the amps & go crazy on the stomp box effects. Adam also successfully changed over the preamp tube in his Eden & gave the kiss of life to his Eden/Schroder rig.

While the rain obviously stopped the police from appearing & yelling at us, it was great to see Brisbane has quite a number of talented bassists out there (even very young ones - James!).

Here are some of the pics I took (resized to 1024 for forums). The originals (1.3~1.4 Mb each) can be found here:

Most of us couldn't play it worth a damn, so it was hard to tell I stuffed up the last time I installed strings on my Warwick, the E only had a wind and a half around the post. Never slipped. Still, I made sure I had three winds when I restrung it.

Hipshots are very good tuners The strings are inserted in a hole in the shaft and are bent 90 degrees. They won't slip. On the two thicker strings, I don't put more than one winding as these strings are more prone to breakage because of their size. (ask me how I know ) Last thing I want is to break a C# and be stuck paying another 35$ for that one string + shipping to Aus

It's not you, most likely your Jazz is the same size or bigger than the 9's body. I don't feel ERB's should be so much bigger and heavier than a regular instrument. There's definitely extra weight because of the neck width but I feel the bodies can still look good and be comfortable with a normal size. I don't "get" why some ERB builders will do the body an inch or two wider. Makes no sense to me, it just adds up weight. Then again, if I ever have to do it again, I'll definitely make the treble side of the body and extra 1/2"-1" wider just to be able to have a decent size electronics rout. The Bartolini is seriously cramped up in there. The super huge pickups take A LOT of space.

Here's the unedited 9 minute long video of the Brisbane GTG #2. It's very noisy unfortunately.

Ouch! Never even considered that. Didn't mean to sound un-impressed by the instrument on the day, I was just a little overwhelmed!

Cool stuff! I would have loved to have a bash on Alan's 75 RI. Jazz basses are it for me! By the way Chris, your SX P sounds awesome, even on tape!

Hey Adam, hows the Epiphone Jnr sound through the Schroe? Does it provide much juice? It looks so funny

Well if you like trebly-overdrive that doesn't have a lot of volume, it sounds great. Really for how much it cost it sounds pretty darned good. I never really had the intention to use it for bass, its for my umm '6-string' endeavors.

I was quite the fan of the little Epiphone through the Shroe, it got sweetly dominated for volume but as long as you didn't run it too far into distortion, there was quite a nice tone.

The 9er definitely made my day though, I'm super gassing for a 7 string fretless now. Its an incredible experience to play, everything else just seemed so small in comparison.

Hey Bobe,
I know a woman down the road from here in Agnes Waters, Queensland that's originally from Rochester, NY...to save you on shipping maybe I'll have her bring you the bass next time she's over there to visit her relatives...until then, I can have Phil send it to me and I'll "hold on to it" for you...
Of course, I'm kidding (mostly)...enjoy the bass...

Man guys, I wish I could have come to the GTG...but it's been difficult for me to get anywhere these days outside of work travel and even then it's been limited to a couple days a couple of times a year...
