May be moving to Perth from Houston

Job relocation. It was a choice between Perth, Nigeria, Angola and Kazakhstan. I hope I made the right choice.

The company will probably offer to ship a reasonable amount of my gear for me.

Should I try to carry a bass on the plane or trust the bass to shipping?

Speakers and cabs....Using a LMII and Aguilar...ship or buy in Perth and try to resell?

What type of music plays in Perth?

I think you made the right choice. My wife worked out of Angola for a few months a couple of years back, and Luanda is not the most happening place to be.

As a native Houstonian who got out 4 years ago, I'm happy for you!

Perth could be pretty cool. My college roomie/best man is aussie, and is currently back in his homeland living in Sydney. I'm planning a visit next year.

I would for sure take the guitar with me on the plane as well as the LMII. I'd probably buy a aggie over there.

How long you gonna be there for.

And I gotta ask, with the list including kazakhstan, Nigeria and Angola, are you in oil and gas? What do you do?

Check with MB on your head. You may need a different transformer for the Aus current.

I think I'd prefer Aus to any of those other places you listed.

Perth is awesome if you can stand the isolation, laid back attitude, lack of customer service, the nanny state mentality AND THE DRIVERS!!!! But our interest rates are hitting rock bottom and the house and land values are slipping, while rents are still sky high, so it's an investors market right now. Good time to come re-establish yourself.

Musicwise it's a wide demographic but in Metalcore and emo cover bands dominate the inner city venues. There is a strong indi scene here too, as well as lots of cover bands. Check out some local music resources here:

http://www.xpressmag.com.au/
www.westernfront.com.au (Metal)
www.perthbands.com.au (I'm SOU812 there but hardly post just tend to lurk)

And yes you'll need an adapter . . . or just go to one of the stores here - Oh yeah...speaking of stores you won't get the choice of gear you're used to here - or bands. Or venues.

Oh yeah, and no plinking unless you're rural/country. . . and given your current location its probably fair for me to say you'll hate the choices afforded you in that regard too.

I agree that of the places you listed, I'd rather stay here...or maybe move to Texas

I moved from the UK to Perth a couple of years ago - we love it here. Gear is expensive to buy in Perth (and Oz) - it is usually cheaper to buy from the US and pay postage, although of course there are disadvantages to that approach.

There's loads of comments on the forums about basses on planes. If it's in a container, and it's a reputable removal firm should be fine. I had 2 antique clocks moved, one with a large glass dome and not a scratch on either. Takes a bit longer tho.

The problem with the amp is the voltage; you won't just need an adaptor, you'll likely need a step up transformer (although some amps can be swithchable by an amp tech, and some can be converted easily by a tech). I'm not sure about LM2s; probably better to check, but probably better to bring it over here, and bring the cab; they cost loads.

I must admit when I moved over here I didn't really listen to advice, I just brought my stuff and worried later.

Well...it turned out to be Angola and not Perth, after all. Guess I won't be checking out any local music.
