"Memphis in May" Music Festival ...

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone here on TB going to be at this festival this weekend? Wife and I are going down early Friday (we are from STL), and spending the weekend in Memphis for the festival ...

Looking to see if anyone else is going to be there, or if anyone has been there before any good suggestions for places to eat.

Maybe I can get my wife to go for it. Her Mom lives nearby, and maybe she would be down for a visit.

Memphis In May

I used to live in Memphis (went to college there) and went to many MIM festivals. Best place to eat is the Rendesvous Restaurant. Best barbeque you'll ever have. Entrance is down an allyway, behid 52 South Street in downtown.

You'll be within walking distance to it from the festival site (which is on the river bluffs downtown.)

While you're there, be sure to hit Beale Street, and Sun Studios. Sun is kind of a hole-in-the-wall that most people pass pretty easily without noticing, but consider the amount and type of music that passed through that little studio and you'll never regret walking through its doors.

Skip Graceland unless you absolutely HAVE to go there--it's not worth the money. Sun is much better!

I would like to go to see a few of the acts but I really hate dealing with hassle of parking, crowds, wading through a sea of people for 30 min. just to go to the john........

Hit up the Stax Museum as well.......also don't forget to hide all valuables and be aware at all times. With the high volume of people in the downtown area the criminals will be out ready to take advantage of you.

I was downtown last night for bike night on Beale st and it's already getting crowded lot's of bikes from other states in town.

Eric Gales had his CD release party at Club 152 last night.

Actually as for BBQ I like the ones at Blues City Cafe right on Beale.

... But Jr. is right the traffic is unreal

Yeah, it's part of the Memphis in May celebration. Music festival is the first weekend of the month, then the sunset symphony is the last weekend of May.

Each year, they "celebrate" or designate a different country. I think this year it's Turkey.

Not sure if I saw you or not lol ... if you saw a guy with a buzzed hair cut with a wife in dreadlocks and tie-dyes then you saw me and the wife.

Well aside from Friday the festival was excellent.

Left STL Friday about 930 after dropping the kids off at school, and then spent the next five hours driving down in some of the hardest rain I have ever driven in. South of Sikeston (right about into AK) we hit about five mins of hail and some of the darkest skies. Found out Saturday that we must of driven through the system that spawned tornado's in the area.

Final got in about 400pm and the festival grounds just about five mins after Flyleaf went on. The weather was iffy with rain starting for about 2 mins and then dying. About 930, I think, the sky just opened up and starting dumping rain like you wouldnt believe. I was soaked through my coat and clothes within two mins of it starting. We eventually gave up after standing in the rain for about 45 mins. Heard later on that Sheryl Crow did hit the stage for about 5 songs during a small lull in the rain. Props to her for getting out and giving people a show.

Saturday was much better ... Buddy Guy did an amazing show, walking out into the crowd and even giving his pick to a little boy and holding the boys hand to play his guitar for a few mins. Absolutely amazing performer for his age and one of the shows that I am glad that I made sure to be on time for. Seether and Disturbed were excellent shows with a ton of energy going through the audience during both of them ... I love metal, but I prefer to hear it in an audience setting and not just off a CD, and that show was excellent as both groups really got the crowd going and into the show.

Sunday was okay ... I missed Jerry Lee Lewis, but from what I heard his show wasnt that good. Finger Eleven I told myself I would give another chance. I caught them in STL playing with Hinder and Black Stone Cherry and thought they absolutely sucked live but thought maybe they just had a bad night. Nope I was wrong ... they sucked just as bad in Memphis. Aside from the guitar player jumping around looking like a moron on stage, the rest of the bad was pretty much just standing there (In STL when I saw them, not a single member of the band moved on stage or even tried to get the crowd into the show). Then to make it even worse they ended their show 20 mins early. We are only talking like 75-85 mins shows so to end 20 mins early was just a decision that I think showed poor showmanship on their part.

Beale was fun ... thank someone for Beale. On the festival ground the only beer you could buy was Bud and Bud-Light. I didnt drive 300+ miles in tornado weather to drink the same crappy bear I could get a home. Atleast once off the grounds and at Beale I could get some Guinness or Blue Moon.

Didnt make it to Sun Studios unfortunately ... though I didnt make it to check out the Gibson factory store. Although at the time I didnt realize I was walking around the place wearing a Fender shirt LOL .... oops
