Montreal Jazz fest, Friday visit

Just amazing. Though I'm not into that big (huge) gathering of people outside with the free concerts that are part jazz, blues, bluegrass, soul, rock, etc.... Sometimes good, but not always. I mean, Jazz played on 16 ft high stages, 40 feet wide, with light shows that rival Pink floyd's, isint the kind of jazz I enjoy, but to each his own.

The small intimate gatherings at the Hyatt Regency were great. Mini concerts, interviews, seminars, etc, from the jazzfest, the Regency, and the Guitar show. Got there at noon, saw a school band, then John Jorgenson (I got there 10 minutes before the clinic, We were 4 people in the room, and the room finally had maybe 30 people in it at its prime), and he was awesome. A few Classical, flamenco, jazzy guitar mini concerts, then Jake Shimabukuro (a ukulele master), and that was pretty awesome, more mini concerts, A jazz-blues quintet on one of the outside stages (Very young players, impressive).

Finaly, checked out the simmm tent, and the theme was, learn Saxophone in 60 minutes. They actually had about 25 saxophones, and although probably interesting for the participants, hell for spectators. Asked the sound man there if he did anything wrong to be assigned to that tent. Themes are learn guitar, saxophone, djembe, harmonica, etc, in one hour.

Anyway, gonna go again tomorrow, with my bands guitarist.

I went there tonight to see the Marcus Miller show, was pretty awesome, Marcus' tone was just incredible, you could feel the whole floor shake every time he slapped his E string. Anyway, I'll be back tomorrow for the Sylvain Provost concert at 2 o'clock.

I'll also go see Waza, The Lost Fingers, and check out some of the free shows.

Chicago doesn't have a jazz festival? Better get Oprah on that.
