Portlandia GTG DIY Teaser

So Koobie has an interest in 1x15 cab's ... I have an academic interest in the TC head... A mini GTG yesterday held at Chez Brown (the

domicile of 4mal).

Ed Dietrich's TC head and Marbass combination. A very impressive micro rig. Really pumps the volume ! Best Mark Bass cab I've heard yet.

DIY 1. SingleMalt's TL-606 (Eminence 3015) variant with my B&C test jig on top. Shorter baffle, taller port. Sounds BIG! We did some biamp testing with a few of the cab's using my test jig on top and Eden WT-800 as the driver. Koobie's Aguillar and Sonic cab. The Sonic isn't real smooth but the EV 15B has a more extended hi end than the 3015. Pairing the sonic with either of the 3015 cab's was pretty hip for an old school vibe.

My 2.4 cu ft 3015 cab. So far so good. A little less bass than the 606 variant but maybe a bit smoother. I'm doing some extended comparisons of these two.

The little 15 again, next to passinwind's 12+6, next to his faux-fEarful 15+6+tweet.

As far as things go sonically. The 15+6+tweet is nothing short of amazing ... it's about the only thing I've heard that tops the 12+6 next to it... In extended conversation later, comparisons to the Accugroove Tri115 but bigger sounding and clearer came up. It is simply a ridiculously nice setup. The 12+6 is another flavor of 'really damned fine cab'. If the faux-fEarful wasn't there it would have set the standard.

My 2.4 cu ft design shows real promise. Much like a Bag End S15D but with another 20 hz on the bottom. I'm doing another of these next week. For my old school uses, the WT-800 putting 300 into each of the pair takes me home. The open questions are - is the 606 Variant enough better to justify the size difference ? Should I make a separate top box for the B&C or do a chambered design that will stack with the original ? Time will tell.

Thanks again for hosting this Mal. Koobie's Kartke LH500 was a real revelation -- and such a deal!

That 15/6/1 cab would be tough for most in the US to duplicate, since most of the BMS woofers are pretty tough to get here. An actual fEarful 15/6 should sound pretty similar -- heck, maybe better even? My cab has a different woofer, different midrange, and different waveguide horn than greenboy has spec'd for the fEarful 15/6, and a different form factor to boot, so even "faux-fEarful" is prolly a bit of a stretch. Its pretty much just a parallel development using a lot of the same design philosophy. But as you know, greenboy and I talk about this stuff frequently, so I'm more than happy to give him some of the credit! Thanks for the kind words in any case.

I also think the 12/6 would benefit from having a tweeter, at least for what I do, and I just so happen to have one more of those killer BMS ones that's in the 15/6/1, looking for a home...

Yeah, the waveguide is just as much "in spec" as what I put in the plans - which is basically a place-filler. All the better waveguides sound so close to the same that the only practical difference is the vertical dispersion (50°, 60°, and 90° are the choices).

And originally I was trying to design around the BMS woofer but the availability was a real problem in many countries, and especially here. Good thing, because it costs maybe $100 more if you can actually get it.

Cool pics, 4Mal!

That was real fun and quite informative. It was nice to be able to get things up to volume at one of these things too. We now believe that my garage may have some resonance issues around 'C'. After I clean it I'll get right to work on the resonance issue... there will be some delay there as the motivation to actually clean seems to be in short supply ...

I forgot to mention the LH-500. Yeah, that's an impressive head particularly for an old schooler like me. Very reminicient of the Fender Scoop to my ear - Clearly not the classic interactive tone stack though. Probably a good thing too! At least for Hartke sales. Really a nice sounding amp for low dough.

I really wish I could have made it to the event.

Looks like y'all had fun though. After hearing the earlier Passinwind iterations, I can't wait to hear the latest.

I might try to head up to the Gorge at some point this month. School's out and my daughter is much more manageable on a long car trip than screaming around the house. I wouldn't be able to do much other than drop off the Brunetti for Charlie to look at, but we might be able to grab a quick cup of coffee or something . . .

Mal, thanks for hosting.

That was really cool to be able to hear all the different cabs.

Great pictures. Charlie's stuff was amazing, both of them!
