Bass get together:
October 10th?
At a yet to be disclosed location?
Ideas there?
Goals:
Meet folks into bass, talk, mingle, pick up tips, mentorship those less involved/experience in bands, business, playing, technique, equipment, effects, whatever floats your cabinets.
Likely a good idea to get some cheapo name sticky's.
We can even pick some tunes folks would like to learn how to play from a wide genera and see if we can learn a few(or at least get on that road).
I know there are some really good bassist hiding here.
Come out and mentor folks. Have a bass for sale and want to see if folks might interested? Bring them to the GTG.
Other ideas?
Tom

Too bad Juan over at Bass & Beyond doesn't chime in or step up, I am sure he could use the business right now if we all got together over there..October 10th? Just gotta figure out where..

It would bring out more folks also, and some who have never or not normally would go there. Then once there, seeing a nice bass........the lust brings............
Local shop support of the players is huge.
Not sure why more do not tap into this.
They are not going to lose $ and it does not cost much to do it comparatively as a business owner. Business is about relationships and if no one knows you are around.........TB has a good market of bassist from all over, seems wise to have GTG's are local Bass friendly shops, clinics, sessions etc.
They deserve our support and vice versa.
Shoot Juan an email and see.
Tom

| The big failure so far has been securing a location. I think that's the top priority, and is the deciding factor on when we'll be able to meet up.
That is if we want to do this for free. If someone can front a few hundred bucks to rent out a spot... well, that's pretty easily done. If y'all are like me, though, there's no way I can justify throwing down some money for a spot right now...
Someone needs to find a decent spot, or someone needs to pony up (either money or a spot), and then I think it's safer to start talking about a day to meet up. |

Perhaps Bass and Beyond is a good option for everyone.
Let's try them again and see what they think.
Or Skips Music, anyone that would support the local folks.
I live in a higher density area, so playing is out if it gets loud, and I cannot see us not playing loud
If you know any of the folks in charge at these stores, we should contact them. I do not know them, but I can ask and get it going.
It can also be anywhere in the Sac area, not just inside Sac proper.
I think if $ is on the table, we could rent a picnic site at Discovery park, get a permit for music etc, these do not cost that much and we can bring the family, plug in and play, BBQ for cheap.
Tom

Tom Barr

We had a couple get-togethers there in the past years and they were cool, but they are ANAL about the basses on the wall and people touching them..{understandable}..but we're all "in the know" guys here about what is what. Yeah and they don't market very well locally, mainly internet sales.

Outdoor playing on the bass?
Seems like a good way and low cost.

First off, the City of Sacramento will likely be out. They require a hefty fee to use a park, proof of liability insurance, and other things, depending on the event. It'll cost in the thousands.
I think Discovery Park is technically run by the county, right? That might be entirely different then the city.
I our quest, I remember one of the suburbs was much more reasonable. I think it was Citrus Heights, or maybe Carmichael. I don't remember. The fee was only a few hundred dollars. For our event, the insurance was cost prohibitive, but this would be a "not for profit" event, and probably anyone passing by could show up. Therefore, they may not require insurance for the event. I don't know.
I wasn't the one directly working on this stuff, so my memory is a bit fuzzy. We're doing some studio stuff later today, so I'll ask the guy in the band who looked up this stuff today and try to report to y'all tomorrow.

County Park. http://www.msa2.saccounty.net/parks/Pages/default.aspx
Unless it's a cool morning, flooding and raining etc, not common in Oct.........BBQ, kid friendly, spouse friendly...........no booze...but that's another permit fee...........

Bathrooms, plenty of other activities.
I run long distance and go by there 2-3x a week.
Plenty of parking, shade, BBQ pits, bathroom access, horseshoes, archery.
I honestly was thinking it would cost more myself.
But..........less is good too
I've run by and seen bands playing there.
I would not leave anything around etc, but if there's a group of folks, it's quite safe.
This time of year, the park gets little use. Sat/Sun more show up for pinics etc, swimming if it's warmer.
It's also perhaps the most central park around.
Land Park is close to me, but the permitting is more.
Other Sac City Parks such as amplied sound permits run about 25$ per hour for most parks: http://www.cityofsacramento.org/Park...icate.html#fee
Example, for Land Park with 3 hours of sound, and 50 folks:
25x3 + 65$ = 135$
So about 7$ per person if 20 folks showed up.
Regards,
Tom

The weather's changing. The park option is quickly evaporating, as I'll bet it'll take a few weeks for the permitting process. That means, unless someone gets things going in the next few days, we're looking at November or December for the meeting.
Anyone have a big enough house that they'd let some internet strangers rampage through? (Just kidding - I've done internet stranger meetups before, and I've never felt in danger or anything like that.) I'd offer up my place, but it's too shoe-boxy for these purposes...
Thoughts? |

Maybe drag and few folks to TB forums as well.
