100 vs 105 difference?

Sign in to disble this ad
I think I'm going to try a set of Fender 7150's on my Squire VM Jazz. If I get the 7150ML, that'd be the same gauge that comes on it from the factory. I was wondering what difference there'd be with the 7150M, which has an 85 A string instead of 80 and a 105 E string instead of a 100. Deeper bass? Would it fit the nut without modification? The only reason I'm asking is I'm using Ernie Ball Super Slinky now in 45-100 and it feels okay but the bass on the E string seems to be lacking. But that could be how the board in my church is EQ'd. Also, I'd probably have to adjust the neck, too, right? Even though they say the neck is hard maple, it's very thin.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

It may make a difference in tone and depth, but you'll have to try it. And yes it should fit just fine, it's standard guage.

Yes it will sound a little deeper, and should slide in to the nut just fine, but rather tight at first (that's only .005 thicker). I did that with my Ibanez SR using 50 / 70 / 90 / 110 gauge (for drop tuning) when it came stock with 45 / 65 / 85 / 105.

The 7150's are stiffer than the stock 7250's. You could probably stick with the same guage and still get more bottom. If you do move up, the 105 and 85 should fit the nut without problem beings your only going up a half a step. The 105 set will have a darker/deeper timbre than the 45-100's, and you will get very good percussion besides.
A slight neck adjustment may be needed, but only about an 1/8th to 1/4th a turn.
