.125 vs .130 B string

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm just thinking out loud right now, but for anyone who may have noticed, I had a dilemna recently where I had two A strings in a pack of DRs. This problem as since been settled, but one of the solutions that I was considering was ordering a pack of strings from The Perfect Bass, as it would have cost slightly less and save me gas money, and then return the defected pack to Guitar Center and use the money for a One Spot.

The thing about The Perfect Bass though is that they only have packs with .125 gauge B strings, and not the .130 that I was looking for. I don't think it would cause much problem if I installed a .125 on my bass, but is there much of an advantage or disadvantage between the two?

I think the .125 will sound better. I think the .130 is way too thick and it cuts down on ring and overtones. I'm using a .120 on my 5.

I personally haven't noticed a lot of difference between the 0.130 D'Add XL that I was using on a BEAD P-bass and the 0.125 Fender 7350 Stainless that I currently have strung on my Squier Deluxe Active 5. The 0.130 is a bit stiffer, but that allows me to dig in a little more, and by doing that, the overtones come back into the string. I like the D'Adds, but the 7350's sound really good on the squier...so it will be a few weeks before I can say fore sure (my spare set of strings at the moment are the D'Adds)

Some good folks say a .130 will sound better. Gary Willis is one.
I use a .125 and get a good sound from it. If the strings I like (Ken Smith Compressors) were available in .130 I'd try one, but since they don't, I stick with .125 and it be workin' for me.

Perfectly matched to the rest of the set & bass. IMHO/E tension is more dependent on construction than gauge or scale.

The .120 feels fine to me, but I'm also using .040-.060-.075-.095 on the other strings.

Base your pick on how tight you prefer your A string - what is the gauge of your A string? Biggest concerns are that the .130 sits sonically right with the rest of your string set and that you don't have to alter your technique too much to play it.

And I guess it's not "super tense" on your neck there is it?
