Pass this on to any short scale players you know. No need to be totally limited in string choice but it doesn't work for stainless or flats. Stainless doesn't solder and flats will come undone on the inside.
The key is to lightly crimp the ferrule (it takes a vice) and solder before the end is cut off. Keeps the wraps tight. A buddy and I have been messing with these for about 10 years. We figured out a while back that a 7 string guitar neck works well for a 5 string bass with narrow spacing or a 4 string with about normal spacing at the bridge. The bridge and top nut have to be fabricated for either.
