Question 1978 MusicMan StingRay STRINGS

Sign in to disble this ad
Help!

I have a 1978 Fender MusicMan Stingray...I am having it setup for the first time in 15 years and want to put 1/2 round strings on it.

My tech says he can NOT find the extra long strings needed in anything but round wound for the beloved string-through-body Stingray. I warned him about this and he didn't believe me until he went to put new strings on!

The Fender Stingrays apparently require even longer strings than other through-body models...and, I remember this being an issue when I last replaced them but do not recall how I resolved the issue (it has 1/2 rounds on it now).

I cannot imagine I am THE only person on earth who has one of these old babies and wants 1/2 rounds!?

Does ANYONE have experience with this particular bass and WHO makes strings to fit her??

Thank you in advance for any leads you may have...it could be that I have to stick with round wounds (or go to flat wounds?).

Are you sure the D'Aaddario Super Longs aren't long enough?

I used GHS Brite-Flats on my pre-EB StingRay a long time ago. In fact that's what was on it from the factory. Joel DiBartolo, the bassist in Doc Severinson's Tonight Show Band developed a set of gauges for the 'Ray. I liked them better than the D'Addario HR-72 sets I used on the Precision. Of course I sold that 'Ray around '94, but they don't need any longer strings than a 34" scale Lakland or a pre-57 Precision.
