Website says the strings that come on the bass are Super Bass 8250M nickel plated steel, 45-110TW.
Anyone have any comment why they would put a 110 on there?
I don't think I've ever had a bass come with anything heavier than a 100 E string stock.
I normally play 45-105 SS LoRiders but I'm kind of digging these 45-110 nickels. Heck I couldn't even tell it was a 110 and assumed it was a 100 until I saw the spec on Fender's website.
I switched 'em out for GHS Boomer .105s, and string it through the bridge. Call me traditional, couldn't get with the tapered core thing, though I tried out GHS Rene Martinez tapers before going back to regular strings.
Maybe to provide enough tension when dropping down to D?
I don't know if that's why Fender installs them, but that's why I switched back to them two years ago on my Jazz. They are great for that purpose and a fantastic match for the bass overall. I don't plan on using anything else, and the same goes for my new Jazz V. I'm even thinking of switching to Fender 7250's on my G&L basses.

I don't know WHY Fender chose this guage for the E string, but having owned 2 MIA Jazzes and 2 MIA Precisions with them I couldn't find anything that felt or sounded better for those basses...assuming you like nickel rounds of course.
They feel smooth and balanced and lasted a long time for me.
The taperwound thing is a non issue once you set the action up for it.
I still have 2 or 3 unopened sets laying around with nothing to put them on! (sold the Jazzes, down to one P that wears flats these days)
