I have been using chromes exclusively for a while now. I naturally threw them on my new MIA Jazz once I got it in the door. Man, talk about dead. I was pretty disappointed because they rule on my Warwick. After some research and some good advice from fellow TB'ers I decided to try the DR's.

I was actually going for the Sunbeams but, being in Canada, the local shops are not very well stocked. I walked out with some nickel lo-riders and a bit of apprehension. The verdict: even though I'm not a fan of new strings I'm loving the l-r's, they are super punchy and clear. Very pleased.

Now, what should I expect to happen to these guys? How long before they mellow out? They sound great right now but my tone requires a little less zing. Thanks again to all the DR fans for letting me in on the secret

Cheers,
Burnz

Glad to see another person converted

DR's certainly take more time than other strings to mellow out, but that final tone lasts much longer than most other strings. Chances are they will nail your desired tone within about a week of playing. Let us know!

I use Hi-Beams on my Warwick, and just put a set on my Fender Jazz. I bought Stainless Steel Lo-Riders for my Warwick to see what happens...your good experience with the nickel Lo-Riders give me hope (not that I expect anything but top-notch from DR anyway...)

How do the nickel lo riders compare to other nickel roundwounds you have tried?

I am actually curious about the SS. I prefer nickel but I get the impression that these are a little smoother than most SS strings. I will probably try the sunbeams next but after that I'll give the steel a go.

Cheers,
Burnz

Before I switched to Chromes I was a lifelong member of the D'Ad XL club. It has been a while so it's not exactly an A/B test but these are definitely in the same ballpark. The lo-riders seem to have a bit more mid-range and less zing. I'm also pretty sure that there is more tension on the lo-riders than the XL's, definitely a big difference coming from the flats.

Other than the XL's I've played the Fender 8250M that came with my MIA Jazz. They really didn't do it for me and I attribute this largely to the 110 taperwound E. It just felt out of proportion to the other strings.

It will be easier to compare once the strings settle in a bit. I will be sure to follow up.

Cheers,
Burnz

I also recently went from flats (LaBella) to Nickel Lo-Riders on a Jazz Bass and am very pleased. Great mids-plenty of bottom better highs. It took 1 week + for the zing to subside.

I just put the Lo-Riders on my Corvette today and WOW!!! All I can say is that the slightly more stiff Lo-Riders completely trump anything I ever thought about Hi-Beams. All weird buzzing and clicking is GONE from my bass. The stiffness takes a little getting used to, but these strings are fantastic. I can't give them a real review yet, as they need time to settle in still (and get rid of that ear-piercing-first-week-DR-string-zingggg that happens with every set of DR strings...).

That being said, the Hi-Beams are a much better fit on my Fender Jazz than they were on the Warwick. I think I'll be using Hi-Beams for my J-Bass and Lo-Riders for my Warwick all the time from now on!

I used Rotosound Swing 66's for many years and after a suggestion by one of our fellow TB'ers I tried the DR Lo-riders on my P-bass and was pleasantly surprised. I further tried the Sunbeams on my Pensa J-4 custom with Lindy Fralins from Rudy's in NYC and again, was very satisfied. The strings definetly hit a sweet spot after they've been on a few weeks and it stays that way longer than any other string I've tried.
