35" 5'er strung thru bod

Sign in to disble this ad
My Lakland came with Lakland strings strung thru the body. Since than i haven't seen any other strings that'd work. As my heading suggests its a 35" 5 string so it'd probably take extra-long scale. Long scale doesnt cut it if i wanna string thru the body. Anyone know of any brands? I could order from Lakland again i kno...i'd like more options tho.

Also, side note, (yes, i'm new to the strings section) have you noticed a difference in sound stringing thru the body vs. the bridge??

thanks all

No difference in sound IMO and IME, too.

Same situation for me my friend...

i'm using D'addarios NickelWound, 5 Strings Extra-long scale.. i generally have to order them but there's not supposed to have a price difference...

For trough-body i've felt more sustain for my B and E strings, not cause it's trough-body and "touching more wood" like some says, but because the angle of the strings, so the tension that the string is putting on the Bridge is higher...

so there's no difference for the A,D and G strings cause their angle from the bridge to "the End of the bridge" ( so where the ball-end of the string is...) and from the bridge to the hole of the bass is almost the same... not for the E and B. IMO

and you can try DR string, there is a lot of TB'ers who love them, specially cause of their longevity.

You'll likely be able to get most any brand you want - look for extra long scale strings. DR measures 37.5", and most others measure 38". They're designed for your circumstance.

I use DR Fat Beams (MM sigs) on my 55-01 and they are the bomb. Very versatile and fit my bass well.

Ken Smith has XL sets that will work through body on a Lakland. I tried a few brands of rounds and finally came back to Lakland nickels. Now I'm using TI Jazz Flats on my 55-94 and keep rounds on my Brice six-string if I need a change of pace.

sunbeams...

I just put some DR Sunbeams nickels on my recently attained 55-02 (thru body)and I really like em. Just went with what I read here to make a decision of which first DR's to try. The 55-02 came with some quite old Lakland SS's that the previous owner liked the tone of. I've also used Lakland SS's and nickels on my 55-01. I like nickels now but I just picked up a set of super long Da'd flatwounds, man local store had em for $47, ouch. Started playing in a blues band last week and I thought the flats might work better for blues but the DR's are so new and I like em that I'll wait abit before I use em on the -02. Might just put em on my L2500 but its got new Da'd XL nickels, the B came up short to string thru body but they still work, nice strings too. I think most DR's are extra long scale(?), could be wrong. But I'll use DR's on my -02 again, maybe the lowriders, we'll see, I gotta read more about em here on TB. All my basses got new strings this year and they prolly wont see new again til this time next year

and...

I read here a few times now that stringing flats thru the body could make the strings unwind at the break? I waited for a long time for those Super Long Chromes to arrive so I could string em on my G&L L2500 or 55-02 thru body but should I return em and get the regular length. I dont mind stringing thru bridge if its going to keep the strings intact.
