35" Scale...do I need special strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just picked up a Peavey Cirrus and its longer scale than my jazz I just sold. I have a pack of EB's on the shelf I had for the jazz, will they work or do I need some kind of XL string?

Thanks

String scales seem to vary by manufacturer. Some strings, like D'Addario, will need to be purchased in the Super Long gauge, expecially if stringing through-body. Strings from other manufacturers, like DR and Circle-K, are plenty long right off the shelf.

You'll need to see what strings you want, and how long they are. That is one obstacle w/35" basses (I have 2 of them). Some strings just aren't manufactured in a long enough scale.

I use D'Addario straight through the bridge on my lakland and they work fine standard length. Now through body is a different story.

Some strings which have colored windings at the tuning gear end may not get all the thread past the nut, but this does not effect the tone or anything.

example chromes on my 35" if Put chromes the blue winding is right at the nut or very slightly in the first fret area. I dont see it as an issue though.

All have at least 37" of winding and will fit fine.

D'Addarios...you'll have to measure the lengths from the nut to the ball end and see how long of a string you'll need. They should have their meaurements on their website.

I'm not saying that it is an issue with you, but I have 2 5 strings, one 34'' scale, one 35'', and if I use Regular length chromes on the 35'', it is as you say, with the silk in the nut/kinda first fret, and that does pose an issue for me, because it causes the string to sit lower in the nut than usual(the strings are tapered) So while it doesn't effect the sound of the strings, it could effect string height. Just throwin my 2c out there

I know exactly what you're saying in may case on the b string it is hardly noticeable and doesnt effect my action that much.
It can only effect string height by the thickness of the silk which isnt much.

I get what you mean. When I tried to put the regular scale on the 35'', it was like, much more then just the end of the silk. Regardless, the 34'' scale and 35'' scale strings cost me the same, so I just use the super long scale just because they make them, haha.
