Hi fellow low-enders,
I'm having trouble finding the right strings for my new bass and I'm wondering if you can help me out. Here's the situation:
I recently acquired a Mike Lull P5. I've never had a bass this high-quality. The reason I'm having trouble, though, is that it is a 35" scale bass where you can string only the low B through the body. Right off the bat some string sets aren't long enough to fit the 35" just via top load, with the exception of DR's and super long D'addario's. Ball-end of the bridge to the nut is 36.75" However, I'd like to be able to string the B through the body. The only string I've found long enough to do that are the DR "Long Necks". There are 2 problems with those, though. 1) I don't really like the feel of the surface of the string. They're a little "sticky" to me. 2) The B string is perfect when strung through the body. Just the right length. However, you can't string the other 4 through the body, and that being the case, they are tapered on the ball end and the taper starts a little too close to the pickup, as others have noted.
What's the solution? In a perfect world, I'd be able to use Nickel Lo-Riders with a "long-neck" low B that was nickel. However, they don't make a nickel long neck. I'm thinking I might have to special order just the low B long neck and then a regular stainless low-rider set to match it.
Any other suggestions? What are some of you guys using who have 35" scale basses that you can string through the body?
