4 string Michael Kelly Dragonfly

Sign in to disble this ad
hi gang,

I own a four string Michael Kelly Dragonfly with phosphor bronze strings.

We're doing an all acoustic Sufjan Stevens folk type gig for Christmas Eve.

I need new strings and I'm not sure how I feel about the bronze ones.

any recommendations for a string change?
some regular roundwounds?

I'm looking for something a little less bright, and something that doesn't leave an awful smell on my hands.

thanks!

I used to use phosphor bronze myself. Too noisey, too twangy, and not enough low end. So.....I tried the tapewound strings and they were okay, but it still wasn't what I was looking for soundwise. Then I tried a set of light (.40-.95) GHS Precision flatwounds on the thing and it sounded really great!

I would imagine that a set of TIs in nickel wound would be cool as well.

not a wide selection of tapewound strings where I'm at.

when you say "sounded really great", what do you mean?

darker?

I'm looking for something less bright.
and without that God-awful copperish smell.

hey Bus MUte, did those bronze strings feel kinda sticky or like they grabbed your fingers and where hard to pluck to you? i just changed the strings on my Dragonfly 5-string b/c i didnt like the bronze strings for feel. i just put some ernie ball Regular Slinky's on it. still in the tuning process from bridge trouble though.
