Help! I need some suggestions on what 5 string bass sets have taper core B strings in them. I am having the hardest time finding them in my local music stores and I am now realizing that I will have to special order them. What sets are out there? I usually use either a 125 or 130 taper core B string along with a 45, 65, 85, 105 guage strings. Thanks in advance.

I prefer Ken Smith strings as mentioned above... |

It's odd and it works for me, so take it for what it's worth. That aside, the Ken Smiths are great strings as well. |

I have a set of these MTD strings on my 6 string and I am really, really impressed with them. They are nickel, have an exposed core B and sound amazing. I will most likely be putting these on my Lakland fiver next. You can buy them here.

I ordered them and they shipped to me rather quickly.
I need Taper Core B also on my Warwick. I was going to file the saddle, but these strings are great! |

I bought a set with a "taper wound" B recently, but after opening the set, I found that the taper was only long enough to mount on the bridge, not through-the-body. I don't remember the brand right now, possibly DR or Blue Steels. Somebody is making them, as my Lakland came with them, but it would be nice to be able to pick some up locally without having to re-order them from Lakland.

In fact, it is so long that they can be kind of annoying when strung to the bridge. First of all, if you like to play back against the bridge for "that" sound you can find yourself on the transition of the taper.
Also, if you have PUs thatsit back close to the bridge, you can get a "warbling" kind of tone from these due to the extended exposed core.
I used them on my Lakland through body and really liked them a lot; however, I will not use them on my Modulus basses for the above-mentioned reasons. I always use the DM SR2000s. They are best string around IMO. |

Cheers,
