5 string bass strings with taper core B string

Sign in to disble this ad
Help! I need some suggestions on what 5 string bass sets have taper core B strings in them. I am having the hardest time finding them in my local music stores and I am now realizing that I will have to special order them. What sets are out there? I usually use either a 125 or 130 taper core B string along with a 45, 65, 85, 105 guage strings. Thanks in advance.

you might want to look at 4 string sets with a B purchased seperately to get the taper core seperate...

a lot of string sets will have the B E A D strings tapercored...

I prefer Ken Smith strings as mentioned above...

I use tomastik power bass strings on one of my Zon's and I oddly enough use an E string (107 gauge) as a B string and I get not only a great focused tone from it (as opposed to a "fatter" gauge B string) but it has been easier for me to really zero in on the intonation as well. It's odd and it works for me, so take it for what it's worth. That aside, the Ken Smiths are great strings as well.

Sadowsky or La Bella. They both have great B strings. You can go steel, nickel, or flat. There are a number of great internet places to get them.

These nickel Carvin strings have a tapered B. I had them on a Spector and they sounded great. And they're $14.99

I have a set of these MTD strings on my 6 string and I am really, really impressed with them. They are nickel, have an exposed core B and sound amazing. I will most likely be putting these on my Lakland fiver next. You can buy them here.

Go with Blue...

Sadowsky's! Blue (I prefer nickels myself).
I ordered them and they shipped to me rather quickly.

I need Taper Core B also on my Warwick. I was going to file the saddle, but these strings are great!

The bottom four strings of the Pedulla 5-string steel sets have tapered windings. Nicely balanced strings, with a good B, IMO.

How many tapered sets are there that allow through-body-stringing? I bought a set with a "taper wound" B recently, but after opening the set, I found that the taper was only long enough to mount on the bridge, not through-the-body. I don't remember the brand right now, possibly DR or Blue Steels. Somebody is making them, as my Lakland came with them, but it would be nice to be able to pick some up locally without having to re-order them from Lakland.

Up until 2003, I used and swore by Ken Smith tapered core strings. I would say Ken Smith's are what you should be looking at.

THE DR Longnecks have a really long exposed core that will allow them to be strung through body.

In fact, it is so long that they can be kind of annoying when strung to the bridge. First of all, if you like to play back against the bridge for "that" sound you can find yourself on the transition of the taper.

Also, if you have PUs thatsit back close to the bridge, you can get a "warbling" kind of tone from these due to the extended exposed core.

I used them on my Lakland through body and really liked them a lot; however, I will not use them on my Modulus basses for the above-mentioned reasons. I always use the DM SR2000s. They are best string around IMO.

Tapered B Core

I use Ken Smith Bass Burners with a tapered B Core and it works great in my saddle of the bridge.

Another vote for SIT. I love 'em. Likely have to buy them online, though. IME, most stores, GC included, just don't carry a large variety of bass strings.

I'll vote for the MTD strings, although I've only used the stainless steel ones (for many years). From memory, they are a little brighter/zingier than the Ken Smith strings (purple wrap), but both brands are very nice.

Cheers,

EG
