5 String Equivalent for GHS Brite Flats

Sign in to disble this ad
I like using GHS Brite Flats on my 34" scale fretles bass (.49-.62-.84-.108). They're not quite as bright as round wound strings, but they're much brighter than typical flats. They're also easy on the fingerboard, have pretty good balance from string to string, and last a long time.

I'm looking into a 5 string fretless (34 inch or 35 inch scale), but unfortunately, GHS Brite Flats are available only for 4 strings. Are there any good ground wound/bright flat strings out there that are also fairly heavy gauge? From past experience, I would prefer a B string that is at least .135 or thicker. I've looked around this site as well as some of the manufacturers, but I haven't seen anything yet.

Thanks!

Ken Smith Slickrounds, or D'addario Halfrounds, or SIT Silencers would all give you a 5-string set in the groundrounds category.

I don't think any of them are going to have a .135 B.

Rotosound 77s could work for what you need. I found them very groundwound-ish in both feel and tone. I know they come in a 5 string set.

I prefer compression wound strings for fretless. They are more round, but still much better on your FB. Check out Ken Smith Compressors or GHS Pressurewound.

You can get a GHS Brite Flat B from www.juststrings.com in the single strings section, but I think it is around .130.

for a 34" scale, GHS has a .130" brite flat.

the juststrings.com part no. is GHS_BF130, I think the GHS part no. is BF130. Elderly doesn't stock them, but can get them. There may be other places have them as well. I need to get a set myself.

Correction....it looks like Elderly stocks them now, it shows as a part on their site.
