i have 2 basses that i want to put flatwounds on
the first is Dean Edge 5-string fretless with a scale of 35"
and the second being a Schecter Stiletto Studio 5-string with a scale of 35" as well
my problem is that i bought awhile back a set of 5-string faltwounds that said right on the pack "long scale" and when i went to put them on, they were a couple inches short
does anyone have some good strings that fix my bass that i could go buy???
thank you for reading my post and thank you for helping me out |

Does DR make a 5 string set of flats? They will fit; DR makes really long standard gauge strings. |

I'm looking at flats for my Squier V Jazz, with more of a GHS vibe than Chromes for this particular bass.

There are a limited number of string production facilities, so a lot of the factories are making strings for other companies as well. (It's not like Michael Tobias or Rob Elrick are winding MTD and Elrick strings in their shops, for instance...)
But those strings are made to that other company's specs in terms of things like wrapping count and composition, core shape and thickness, etc.--all the things that distinguish one string from another, really--and those specs may be very different that the specs for the strings made under the factory's own label.

I agree with everything you say. I will add that depending on the manufacturer, the final product may retain some of the same qualities of the manufacturer's branded strings. I would speculate that the manufacturer of the "re-branded" strings were likely chosen because their strings are close to the vision that is being sought in the tweaked version.
Then again, maybe not.

Then again, maybe not. | Ok, just wanted to be sure you weren't set on getting Bright Flats under the Carvin label! They might be similar, or they might not.

Exact same strings. If there's a difference in metal formula, it's so slight that I would bet no one could tell.
Carvin's website still says La Bella, I think, and La Bella still clearly makes their rounds. The flats are now GHS Precision Flats. |

(Yes, the DR flats have silk...I picked up a used set to try on an MTD fretless and was surprised to see it...)
