5 string gauge advice

Sign in to disble this ad
Just wanted some advice, I usually play with Status-Graphite hex cores which are utterly flawless. When I first started playing 4 string I used 30-90s then moved up to 35-95s. Only recently having moved up to 40-60-75-95 gauge just really wanting a touch more tension in the top strings. Now the thing is I've moved up to 5 string and bought a marvellous Cort A5 which sounds superb but the strings on it and waaaay to heavy, something like 50-130 maybe more. I was wondering if any guys out there can get away with using a 115 B string. I was hoping to use a 40-60-75-95-115 set my new 5 string. The Cort A5 is a 34" bass so I have a feeling I may have to go upwards in gauge for this reason.

Cheers

I just tried out the Hard Rockin Steels 40-60-80-100-128 on a 34" 5 string. The B string is great. The tension is on the lower side compared to what I am used too (45-65-80-100).

I like 40-120 on 5...I can deal with 40-125 as well.

Anything lower than a 125 B string is going to be floppy on a 34 inch scale. A 35 would be a bit better but a 115 B string is kind of thin. You might want to do a custom set and use a 125 for the B and the rest to your taste.
