5 String HighC?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a 5 string Stingray fretless. It came setup for eadgc tunig, I have found I prefer it to fretless BEADG. I just dont dig the B as a fretless. So I compromised and tuned this guy down to DGCFB(flat). Anybody know where to get 5 string sets with a high C? I prefer DRs, but am open to other quality brands. Are the Smith strings any good?

i string my 5er like that and usually just by individual d'addario strings by gauge. sounds cool with the alternate tuning.

pleases tell me I dont have to order individuals

Yeah, I rocked D'Addarios for a long time. I had a falling out with them when they changed the silk wrap on my favorite strings and they no longer would fit my favorite bass. I never got that tone back. ANd for this I will never buy from them again!
No seriously. I would prefer to buy sets that are pre packaged. I just like to have several sets of the same string and setup for that and play those strings for years. Individual strings is technically feasible, But i'd prefer to find a premade eadgc set that is slightly on the heavier side. Like a 110 or 115 for the D and 30 for the B flat.
And is it just me or is juststrings.com a pain to search?

I spent the 90s playing a 5 string with a high B (I play guitar too... it makes sense)

I usually bought a med light 4 string set and a .28 - .30 by itself. I'd order 4 or 5 high strings to keep on hand and then off the shelf 4 string sets to go with them

Ken Smith "Rock Masters" (I think that was the ones) were one of my favorite.

Currently I swear by "SIT Rock Bright Stainless"

check my links for the Fodera and La bella high C sets. Just Strings.com apparently does have them, and it only took me 3 days to find them!
I have never used either brand. So I was curious if anybody has? I am not really willing to buy a 6string set and just toss the low b. Though I suppose I could get a matching 4 string set and use that with the spare B to string my other 5!?

I actually used to tune my Tobias like that, then DGCFB for a while, Then I stopped tuning my guitars like that and stopped tuning my basses like guitars. I just tune straight fourths on all of them, most tuned to D except my Tobias which is back to regular BEADG, so I can take it out anywhere and jam. I am thinking of tuning it in 5ths just for kicks. I read somewhere about Fripp and Belew tuning like that just to avoid playing pentatonically, which is easy to get stuck in on a guitar tuned in the standard fashion.
But where would I even get the strings for that! It would have the range of a 7 string though!
