5 String Jazz Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
I replaced my stock strings with D'addario XL 45,65,80,100,130 and I could not stop the B and E string from buzzing, I had my relief at .028" and action 3mm. I replaced them with Ernie Ball 45,65,80,100,130 the buzzing has stop relief .015" action 2.5mm.

What are the best string for a Squire Modified/ Fender Jazz 5?

You'd likely have an easier time with setup if your E and B strings were a .105 and a .135 or .140.

They'd balance better too.

The thicker the string the more tension you'll need to be at the same pitch, so what knuckle head sounds about right. May need to raise the action by a whisker.

Been using the Ken Smith Tapercore Mediums on my basses for YEARS and I won't play anything else. They will change your life.

With higher tension comes less excursion, so likely the action can come down some.

The .80 and lighter will match the .105 in tension - going to .085 with the .105 will put you in a similar place as you were with the .080 and .100.

Seriously consider/try to find a .135 for your B

So you are saying I go with 45,65,85,105,135? Well a better question, What strings are you using?

I'm suggesting something more akin to this; 45,60,80,105,135 - but I think you'll have a hard time finding a pre-packaged set gauged like this.

I use the strings I make, and my set is either one of two;

.136 .100 .076 .055 .040
or
.142 .106 .080 .058 .043

The tension is almost identical from string to string and they set up very consistently as the excursion is very similar from string to string.
