One of my student asked if I knew a company that makes that. He use a 5 strings but still like to drop-tune his E. Do you know any company that makes a set like that ?

How about a .115? I'm not sure if these are steel or nickel though.

DDT's are for standard intervals and not for drop tunings.

I don't do steels, but I do drop tune and custom sets.

If he drops his E string and keeps it there he should look for a set that looks like;

.136 .112 .076 .055 .040

If he switches between E and D he should look for a set like;

.136 .106 .076 .055 .040

I make the second suggestion because it splits the difference - he will be neither too tight at E nor too loose at D.

For BEADG / BDADG it's best to build a purpose designed set from singles. Just choose favourite gauges for B ADG and add a .110 for the E / D.

. . . but the rest of the set that goes along with those .110's are 4th interval gauges. He needs a single .110 or .112 to swap out the E in a 'normal' .100 set.

That's quite impressive, apart from the B these gauges look fairly equal in tension. Unlike most sets, the E is at a similar tension to the ADG so these sets will be reasonably good for dropping the E.

I just discovered LaBella publish tension information as pdf files on this page.

Tensions for Slappers SN47B ...

.045 G 43.5 lbs.
.065 D 48 lbs.
.085 A 45 lbs.
.110 E 43.5 lbs.
.128 B 33 lbs.

Yep. But by Drop Down Tuning they mean dropping all the strings by the same number of semitones, maintaining an all-fourths tuning. What knuckle_head means by Drop Tuning is a mostly fourths tuning with a fifth between the lowest 2 strings, such as DADG, CGCF or AEADG. This is the widely accepted meaning of 'Drop Tuning'. These tunings require a larger gauge for the lowest string to avoid a flabby tone from an under-tensioned string.

Right - and if he were doing D G C F or C F A# D# or some other 4ths variant these strings would be perfect. I am not slamming the DDT strings - they are indeed a good solution for someone who is dropping the tuning of their entire set.

The OP is trying to find a solution for Drop Tuning which has a 5th interval at E/D which means that the one string needs to be thicker - not the entire set.

Jus'sayin'
