5 string set used for DGCF?

Sign in to disble this ad
Would this be safe?

Currently I'm using my friends old 5 string ernie ball super slinky strings, they sound good, but would it be safe to tune what is normally the B-E-A-D strings to D-G-C-F?

It's probably a stupid question, I've just not heard of it being done.

I personally would not be comfortable at all doing that to my bass. That's a lot of extra tension.

Like dancehall said, it'd be far too much tension. The strings would break on you, and I doubt your neck could even take the tension.

You should get a set of either 50-105 or 55-110. Both those sets work nicely for DGCF tuning and will keep a nice amount of tension so they'll still be comfortable.

I love this topic!
I play in DGCF tuning 98% of the time. The absolutely, positively best set of strings for this tuning is the La Bella Hard Rockin' Steels "D tuning" set. They're built specifically to be tuned DGCF. I've put them on a standard-tuned bass and not had to make any truss rod or action adjustments. They sound and feel great, and they're quite easy on the fingers for stainless steels. I get 'em here. The Web page has the gauges wrong, though.. the correct gauges are .054-.075-.090-.111.

I as well play in D standard and I use LaBella medium nickels(45-105) and they sound awesome. I get mine from Carvin @ 10 bones a pack.

Heh, I ended up getting 55-110 gauges and they work great. Thank you!

I'm planning on making one bass DGCF one of these days... tuned like the top 4 strings of a 7 string bass, with .060-.018 strings.

I just tuned this way for the first time this week, I picked up a set of GHS heavy boomers locally (http://www.juststrings.com/ghs-h3045.html) and so far so good, but dropping that bottom string to C sucks...way too floppy for my taste unless i pick right on the bridge.... I'm on a geddy lee jazz..i'm trying this tuning for a new guitarist we're auditioning and to get into something new..

oh, and these strings are 050-070-095-115

ok this is good for 4 stringers but what about 5 string bass tuned A-D-G-C-F. What are you guys using for the low A? Are you always buying A string separately?
