5ers: Who uses a different brand B-string with the rest of their strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm just curious to know who uses a different brand B along with the rest of the other strings. I've never mixed and matched before, but now I've found a great match. I wanted a fuller sounding B so I replaced the B with an MTD tapered core 135. I was worried about the blend between strings, but it ended up working really well. So I have the Dean Markley Blue Steels for E-A-D-G and the MTD 135x for the B. What are your thoughts?

Probably not cost efficient if you will be buying 2 packs of strings everytime. If you can buy just a B string, may not be a bad idea.

I dig Fodera regular or heavy gauge strings for my 5. they work great. Ritter swordsteels are great too but pricey.

I use DR Lo-riders for E-A-D-G, with a High-beam B-string x-long scale in order to pass it through the body on my 35" scale bass.

Yeah, luckily Mike Tobias offers the MTD 135 B in a single.

I like the D'Addario Pro Steels on my Sadowsky but I use a LaBella Hard Rockin' Steel B because of the tapered core.

Yo D'Addario, make a tapered core B over here!

I use a different brand C since I use Ernie Ball and their .032 C is a little too thick. If I did use standard tuning, I would probably use a different gauge of B, not necessarily a different brand, but I might if EB didn't have the right gauge.

For B-G or E-C tuning, you can just buy a 4 string pack and get a single B or C string from juststrings.com

I don't count

My 5 is currently strung w/Blue Steels, but my 7 has Ken Smith nickel rounds w/a GHS .130 B. The bass came w/a taper wound B, but I prefer non-tapered. It works fine; I don't notice any great tonal difference.

Bassteban,
How do you like the Blue Steels on your 5? I love them on all of the strings except for the B. I felt like the B could use a little more life and some fullness. I guess in the long run no other low B works better on an MTD than an MTD 135x. Do they have the Blue Steels with a tapered core B I wonder...

Melvin, my 5 is a passive MIA Fender Jazz. It's one of those very rare Fender 5s- has a great B. As for Blue Steels, that's all I've ever used on this bass. I have considered throwing flats on for the big change-up. For my money, they(Blue Steels, not flats )'re not as bright as Ken Smith SS, my usual favorite, but not as 'mellow' as nickels. A happy medium for my 'old school(i hate that cliche')' bass, & they seem to sound best when I'm about to change them.
