I'm looking for a set for a six string tuned
" Bass VI" style, (tuned E-E)
For one of those SX 6 string Jazz basses.

Most Bass VI sets have a very thin gauge low E and A,
The Labella flatwound Bass VI set has a .93 E string which is better, but I want rounds.

I'm looking for something closer to a standard gauge for my low strings..slightly lighter is optimum,
Something in the range of a
97-102 Low E string if possible..
It is very tight spacing, so a 105 set may be pushing it.

I've heard about buying seven string sets for E-E,
is that a good way to find what I want?

Well you can make custom string sets from the d'addario website. So you could have a weird tenor/piccolo set if you want. The only thing, you might need a new nut for your bass, if the previous set is a "standard" low B string one.

If the SX in question is 34" scale I suggest these;

.102 .076 .057 .041 .029 .018

or

.098 .073 .055 .039 .028 .018

Intervals are 4ths but ought to retune alright

34"/35" scale sets:

6 String Set - Balanced Standard 100
.100 .076 .055 .040 .029 .020p

6 String Set - Balanced Standard 096
.096 .072 .052 .037 .027 .019p

From here: Circle K Strings - Standard Balanced 6 Strings
These sets are for all-fourths but the difference in tuning is so small they'll work fine.

Or buy a 4 string set plus a single wound .025 / .027 / .028 for B. Some plain steel guitar strings are long enough for the top E, just thread an old bass ball-end onto a .018.
