6 string fretless problem!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi.
Long time since I’ve posted anything here.

I’m really in need for some help. I just gave my Yamaha TRB6II to a luthier in order to be defretted… The frets were removed and the spaces filled with some kind of wood. But I forgot that now I need new strings to it… and that is the problem!

I just cannot find a 6 strings set flatwound…That’s what I need, right? Flatwound, right?

The luthier told me that if I use normal strings the wood from the neck would be worn much faster. I know that he is right, but it will really damage the neck?

Could you please give some insight here?

Thank you very much.
Kind regards,
Nuno

BassPulsar,
It all depends on the kind of wood your fingerboard is. If it is ebony, ebonal, pau ferro or some other kind of hard wood, you should be fine with roundwounds ("normal" strings.) You don't necessarily need flatwounds for fretless, as there are many other options like tapewounds, half wounds, brite flats and of course rounds. If you want to get flatwounds, I believe Thomastik Infeld makes a six string set of flats, and LaBella makes them to, as well as six string tapewounds. Good luck!

Also, I think GHS makes a six string set of brite flats, and I'm not sure but I think D Adarrio makes some halfwounds and maybe some chromes for the sixer.

D'addario makes a 6 string set for 1/2 rounds. You can also buy their 5 string set for Chromes, and add a flat wound high string from either Thomastik, Labella, or even the D'addario 1/2 round. Also Ken Smith makes a compression wound set for 4 strings, but you can also add the low B and high C as singles...

Yeah, Daddario do a high C Chrome, but you have to buy it seperate,

Rotosound also do 6er flats, but they have to be special ordered.

Use nickel strings and you should be fine. Will there be wear? Yes, eventually but 10 - 15 years until you see it.

Don't worry about it.

Hi.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to give me a much more clearer idea.
I've gone with roundwounds for now (I already had a set so, less money...) and see what I'll do in the future.

Once again, thanks.
Regards,
Nuno
