6-string tuning crisis!

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a pretty sweet Warwick thumb Bolton 6er, but the top 1-2 strings keep popping when I tune them.

I'm trying to get C-G-C-F-Ab-Eb. For a while I had the A string from a guitar on there (after popping the e string). I would consider trying G-C-G-C-F-Ab, but I'm not sure it would sound good. Also not sure if I could find strings to accommodate the low G.

Is this just an impossible situation? Should I just get a 5er and keep the 6er tuned to standard? Please, any suggestions would be welcome.

What gauges are you having trouble with? There should be no reason for you to not get the tuning you want...

Mmmm... I don't think (if I'm visualizing this correctly) that you should have a problem tuning your G string up to an Ab, its only a half step. Taking your "High C" up a minor 3rd, that seems like its going to break no matter what. Just because I'm curious, is there a reason you want to tune that way? The intervals read P5, P4,P4,minor3,P5. Looks interesting. Keep us posted.
