7 string players....

Sign in to disble this ad
I am doing a recording project and I want to string up one of my basses D, G, C, F - the top 4 strings on a standard 7 ERB's tuning. I am trying to find some strings that aren't too bright, as the finger noise can get out of hand when working with delays. I'm not sure if I necessarily want to use flatwounds either though.

I've been looking at Conklin, Ken Smith, and LaBella... does anyone have any other suggestions or some reviews of any of these strings? Thanks!

I'd be worried about doinking the neck.

I have a 6-string that I like tuned EADGCF. I use DR Strings for that (standard 4 set, plus .035 and .025)

I use the LaBella flats (6 string set .029 - .128) with a single plain steel .018 from SIT ...... no string noise of any sort, and even volumes across the board ......

i use the smiths, but they're bright, especially when new (that's my reason for using them).
+1 on going with some flats if finger noise while recording is a concern...

I will need to do a truss adjustment for the loss of string tension, and check intonation, but I am led to believe this tuning won't harm the neck at all. I know people who have strung regular scale basses piccolo with no adverse reactions whatsoever.

Would it fit in the nut okay? I know you'd definitely have to file it if you were going the other way... i.e., F#, B, E, A.

It would be loose and the nut slots would be too big. If I were you, I'd get another nut and slot it for the DGCF and keep the EADG one, that way you can switch back, if you want.

Dumb question and I should probably do search... but how easy or hard is it to swap nuts? (That sounds bad.) How is it done? I've always wondered....

It's easy to swap, unless it's glued in, that can be a problem. Making a nut can be tricky though.
