Chromes are good. GHS makes a short scale flat also. Check out www.juststrings.com

My only experience with D'Addario Chromes is with an Extra-Length set on my 35" fretted and fretless four strings. Love them on both. They're quite bright, zingy sounding for flats, then they mellow into a nice solid thump. Very old school but with plenty of definition. Still bright enough to slap with, but think Larry Graham sound, not Marcus Miller.

As for short scale flats -try Rotosound. I have a set on a Hofner Senator. 40-95's, think the set is called 'Monel'. Great tension for a short scale and very articulate too. I think their 'Short' set are for 30" scale. The 'Medium' set worked best for the 32" Hofner.
