ABG: Mixing Metals and alternate tunings

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi All,

What's going to happen if I mix phosphor bronze strings (ADG) with a steel string (C)?

My ABG is a Martin BC15e. It came with phosphor-bronze strings, and I LOVE their acoustic sound--that's what sold the bass for me. Thing is, I have been playing the instrument tuned up to ADGC.

I haven't found anyone who makes a phosphor-bronze high-C. I called Labella to see about a custom set. The Labella guy talked me into getting a set of their steel slappers. It sounds good, but not as good as the phosphor-bronze.

is there any danger in mixing metals in terms of neck tension? Will the volume be radically different? Has anyone tried this?

Also, has anyone extensively used alternative tunings on the ABG (especially 5ths, like CGDA)?

It's time to switch out the strings, so I'm trying to save myself from having too many setups.

Thanks.

There's no danger in mixing metals as long as you choose your gauges carefully for all strings at roughly equal tension.
D'Addario tension guide and charts: http://www.daddario.com/upload/tension_chart_13934.pdf
There will just be a tonal difference.
I haven't used 5ths on an ABG but have tuned basses in 5ths for 15 years, if you want advice on gauges for 5ths tuning let me know
