ABG string advice

Sign in to disble this ad
For the last few years I've mostly played upright, but picked up a Michael Kelly Club Custom 4 for little $. Needs some strings. I'd like to use a set that the already deep tone of the bass, and avoid excessive string noise. I searched and found a few threads on ABG strings, but none really talked about the level of string noise from one set to another.

What do you ABG players recommend? I like TI upright strings, Elixir and DR electric strings. Any opinions on the amount of string noise on those brands bronze sets?

Thanks.

I like D'Addario Chromes on my acoustic bass, but they're flatwounds. Nice thump, great feel.

TI Jazz Flats work great on ABGs IME.

Phosphor Bronze strings just have too much fingernoise and twang for my ears. Tapewounds and flats are the way to go, and give you more bottom. Fender 9120 Tapes and GHS Precision flats in .45-.95 are what I use. They are also lower tensioned than larger gauges, putting less strain on those thin tops. Although I haven't tried them on one, a set if TIs, like DAN55 said, would be a good match.
