Abnormal string breakages!

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all.

Recently, I have been breaking my G,D and A strings really frequently, like every week or 2. I went to my teacher for help, and he advised that I should sand down the grooves on my bridge saddles, as the metal might be rough, and putting stress on the strings.

When I took my strings off and had a look, the saddles had indentations from the wrap wire in them, as my teacher had expected. So I sanded down the grooves of each saddle till they were smooth then replaced the strings.

Even after this, they are still breaking at the same rate. Any ideas?

Is there some relief in the neck? I guess that if you had back-bow in the setup it might put additional pressure on the strings and lead to breaks.

What strings are you using? And what's the brand of bass/bridge?

The neck is set up fairly straight. I dont think the neck is the problem. I use DR fatbeams, and the bass is an Ibanez SRX505, with an ibanez accu-cast bridge. It's the one that anchors the ball ends under a big block of metal, as opposed to stringing them through holes in a plate of metal. Like this one:
