about TI/Chromes/? flats tones...

Sign in to disble this ad
i'm about to go out and plunk down for some TI flats or some Chromes...just need some quick answers here...and yes, i've done a search...just gotta ask, again...

i'm a kinda busy in the right hand finger picker, i always used Roto rounds and now i want to try some rounds on a Squire CV 60's P Bass...i do play some hard rockish heavy music, but also love funky stuff and also a bit of everything...ha...also use a VT Deluxe for drive and extra tones...

i'm wondering which set would be a good call for some big thump and growl and fundamentals and also great for a busy finger picker looking for a big bang and some thud and growl and all that good flat wound stuff...

are the TI flats too high tension for fast busy right hand finger picking? how are Chromes compared tension wise?

which set has got great flat character that will bring out more of the bass...rounds have a quality of lots of "stuff" going on...which flat would set has that "stuff" that only a great flat wound set will give?

TI flats are known for being low tension. I've found TIs to be pretty mellow and busy finger picking might get lost in a mix.

The chromes should have the thud and bass you're looking for. Just give them about one month to break in.

..... and if you go for the Chromes you won't have to shell out the $$ for the TIs

the TI's are low tension but sound great no matter what your playing style.

chromes are nice too (IME, they have more mids and more tension), but lately my favorite flats on a p bass are the new fender 9050SL's and TI jazz flats.

The TI have less tension than the chromes. To me, the TI have a too low tension for fast busy right hand fingering. You're probably better with some chromes 40-100. I used both, and now I use the chromes on my 3 basses.

Chromes, to me, are a little like smooth roundwounds with less overtones and sustain. And, higher tension than the roundwounds I use (DRs). They are bright for a flat which is nice, but I found I really only like the tones when I am using a pick (thats my opinion of course). TI's are way more thumpy and less tension. Try the Chromes first and go from there.

Also keep in mind the new Fender flats 9050CL set 45-60-80-105. They have just enough tension to feel good to a fingerpicker, and are even across the board and up the neck. They growl as well, just a more subdued growl than Rotos.

To respectfully disagree with the above posts, with where you're coming from, try these first. They have a little more tension than the TI's, more growl than the chromes, and these are the strings that converted me from a round wound guy to a flat wound guy. They're also less expensive.
