Acoustic Fretless

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi!
I just got my acoustic bass defretted, and it has some roundwound acoustic bass strings on it. But I wonder what would happen if I put some flatwound strings on it.. Bear in mind that the bass is purely acoustic, no pickup of any sort.
Would the volume decrease that much? Or are there flatwound strings specially for this situation?
I just want to be loud and flat

Oh, and by the way, is it really that bad to use roundwounds on fretless basses? I've heard that it "eats up" the fretboard, so that's another reason (actually the main) for me to be asking if there is such thing as flatwound strings for acoustic bass or flatwound strings with a good unplugged volume!

I use Fender tapewounds on acoustic and acoustic fretless. Somewhat loud, very uprightish.

Flatwounds sound great on acoustic basses: I have D'Addario Chromes on mine and it rocks!! Rounds will damage the fretboard after a few years of use (I've heard 2-20 years.) That damage can be replaced, so use what YOU like. Let's see this bass, man!!

I like the somewhat controversial D'Addario half-rounds on my defretted AB-20. BTW, rounds will rarely even touch a fretboard(as opposed to a fingerboard).

Flatwounds sound great on acoustic basses, unplugged? the only question is about the amount of volume that is lost using flatwounds instead of regular phosphor bronze roundwounds, in unplugged acoustic. As for the plugged volume, I know flats would sound awesome, but my bass is purely acoustic.. (yet! )
