I bought a Dean 4 string back about 4-5 months ago just to mess around with in the house to come up with new material, practicing and playing with a buddy of mine who has an acoustic. Decent practice bass, but has some draw backs that I found. The bass needed some adjustments when I first got it with the neck. I put a slight curve in it to help with the action by adjusting the truss rod. Since its an acoustic bass you don't really have an adjustable bridge so its hard to get the action just right like you can on an electric bass. I tried a few things like sticking a piece of sponge under the strings at the back of the bridge, that made the strings kind of dead like "thud" which was not perfect. It might actually sound good plugged in that way but I have not tried to see what that sounds like. If anyone has any suggestions that are useful to help that would be good there.
Now, I want to replace the strings on it as I don't even know what strings came with it stock and they have been beaten pretty good since I got them. They look like they are nickel roundwounds from what I can tell. On the bass I am a pretty vicious player with my attack and finger style. I tend to pluck hard and have a very fast plucking hand so the strings see a lot of action. (I am a fairly new bass player (-lt 1yr ) so I have been focusing a lot lately on my control and plucking hand to keep the sound even and more controlled). I would like to keep as much natural tone on the bass as possible, cut out the buzz and maybe put some heavier strings then what come stock. I also play the bass a lot acousticly with another guitar player so I want some strings that will cut through the mix and provide some better sound.
On my electrics I use Ernie Balls and I am quite happy with them. I see they make some "phosphor bronze" strings? Are most acoustic bass strings of the same material? Could I just wire up a standard set of electric bass strings like the ernie balls I have now?
