Advantages to tapewounds and where to get them?

Sign in to disble this ad
My 4 stringfretless -> 5 string fretless conversion is almost done, so I need strings. I used to use flats, but they're a little TOO mellow, I want to be able to slap if I can. What do tapewounds sound like..? thanks!

They sound even more dead than flatwounds. You will probably want roundwounds. Tapewounds sound more like a double bass.

If you slap and pop then I suggest roundwounds. I don't think tapes would really be condusive to slapping, but I could be wrong.

Actually, tapewounds are more lively sounding than the flatwounds i've played. They don't have as high a tension as flats and can give a more fluid, wider range sound (from vibrato and bending) . Very smooth playing strings that are easy on the fingers and VERY little finger noise when moving along the fretboard. You can also use them on a fretted bass as well. I never played a five string bass with them though and I don't slap.
