ADVICE FROM FLAT WOUND USERS PLEASE

i recently got a mia deluxe p bass, i have always used round wound strings. i can't seem to get a real fat sound out of this bass. i treid thru eq but end up with a more muffled sound than what i want. i,ve read alot of praises of flats on p basses on here. is this what i need to fatten up the tone with out loosing some of the zing. ive always thought of flats of having a dull thump type sound am i wrong. would like a little advise as what might be something to try as i have no expirience with flats. thanks

D'Addarrio chromes are a brighter sounding flatwound as are the Rotosound flats. Maybe try a groundwound or pressurewound(or similar),they are a "middle ground" type string.

There is definitely a trade-off. I like the thumpiness with flatwounds, but its true that you lose some of the "hi fidelity" you get with roundwounds. Flats have worked well on many of my basses, however I just bought an expensive custom bass, that just sounded dead with flats, but it opened up beautifully with rounds. So I think it comes down to the type of music you are playing, and the instrument itself.

Stay away from the half rounds, they feel terrible to the fingers, somehow oddly abrasive ( IMO).

Everyone seems to be looking for a brighter flat at the moment, I jumped in the deep end with some La Bellas when I switched.

Now I play RS66's on my p/j and La Bella 760FL's on my P. You can't really get much different in sounds but thats what led to roundwounds in the first place right?. Its good to get out of that comfort zone, I play things now that I would never have thought to play before just because of how my bass sounds with flats as opposed to rounds. Hopefully a small bit of insight that might help
