If you are used to dead strings, you will hate the bright tone of fresh strings. You will need a few weeks for them to settle in.
Chrome flats are long lasting strings that are good at anything.
If you prefer rounds, go for nickel rather than steal. Steal tend to sound very bright but don't age as well as nickel.

I'll add another vote for d'ad XLs. While I love flats, I think XLs are the best 'do it all' string.

A workhorse string? Definitely the D'Addario XLs. They are right in the middle for sound, consistent and low priced. These always go on a new bass for me, so I can see what it really sounds like, and then make changes later.

Best sounding, longest lasting string? TI Jazz flats for sure - just too dang expensive.

So between the half wound and round wound th round wound is the better choice? With the XL are they very twangy? Not that I don't like a slight bit but I prefer like a jazzy punchy tone. Thanks for all the help buy the way!

Right now, my all-around favorite string would be the GHS Pressurewounds.

Pressurewounds or chromes... Flip a coin or try both. Especially given the type of music you're playing... Maybe start with Chromes and see how they fit. If you need a little more zing, try the GHS.

Yea thats not bad. I am going to have a buddy professionally set it up forn me at the same time so that will help also. At least in the playability portion.
