...I just bought my first set of flats ever. I got some D'Adarrio Chromes. They definitely feel/sound different from roundwound strings. I like 'em so far, but it's far too early to make an educated decision.
Just curious as to what kinda flats everyone is palying. |

The reasons? Well, the chromes come in smaller gauges offering less tension than other flats I have tried. I like their feel and sound. I have tried LaBella and Fender flats and do not care for the feel of them. I had played roundwounds exclusively for 15 years. I would like to try the nylon flats, but on a bass in a store so I would not potentially waste my money.
I came across D'addario Chromes by playing them on a '61 reissue P Bass at Corner Music in Nashville, TN. I immediately felt like "Hey, this is a set of flats I can see myself using."
The chromes on my Ernie Ball Music Man are really surprising. They really even and round off the sound.
I have not played any Thomastik strings.
My favorite rounds are DR nickel lo-riders by the way. Grand piano sounding.
I should be receiving my Godin A4 fretless tomorrow and will be putting chromes on it. |

P-Bass heaven.

The Jazz had the Fender flatwounds on it and I didn't like those at all. Love the Chromes though!

Bit clanky at first, but after breaking in... mid-rangy, yet oh-so mellow...

it calms down that hifi stingray top end. makes it more mellow, more midrangey and to me seems more musical sounding. cuts through great with my band. and chromes are great too man. good luck with those.

-Roundwound would chew up the fingerboard.
-The tone has less definition(which I like for Blues).
-My right hand fingers seem to attack flats differently, and again seem to work better for a Blues feel.
I am not doctrinaire about this;I have roundwounds on my Squier P-bass and my Yahama RBX375.
