| If they sound good to you and don't have major problems with tuning, leave 'em on. I guess it depends on how much you play and how much sweat or oil there is on your fingers. Joe Osborn says he didn't change his flatwounds for 15 years, and James Jamerson was another player who left flats on forever. Roundwounds lose that zing much more quickly than flats, however, and if you're looking for top end, you mat have to change more often. Alcohol swaps can be used to clean strings, and there was a time when we used to boil our Rotosounds for maybe 5 mintes, then slap 'em back on the bass. It worked -- got rid of the crud -- and I never had a string break even though they were being reused. Don't know how many boliers there are these days, though.
