Anybody Salsa ! Bachata ! Merengue !

Putting new strings on my Schecter C-5 to play Spanish stuff... I've been told that Ken Smith's would probably be the best way to go...anybody else has any suggestions...

Salsa, bachata, merengue or any latin music IMO doesn't involve any specific strings/bass.. It's more likely on feel of your bass line and the notes that you are playing.

I used to play salsa, cumbia, merengue, cuban etc, and I mostly used TI Jazz Flats and a foam block under the strings to get that Ampeg Baby Bass sound.

A tube amp, flats, and a foam block under the strings. Aside from gear, 90% of latin music is in the musician.

Yes, latin music is about feel, but the tone of the bass is so huge in some styles because it really functions as the kick drum.

Can't you also mute with your palm and pluck with your thumb if you don't want that foam mute all of the time? I play tunes where some of the players are obviously using a baby bass, but others are using a fretted bass with roundwounds. TIs would be a good compromise for me because when TIs are not muted they still have a good top end brightness.
